What is Director Identification Number (DIN)?

Quick Summary:

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique 8-digit number issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to identify company directors in India. You can obtain a DIN through the SPICe+ incorporation process or Form DIR-3 for an existing company. The government fee for DIR-3 is ₹500, and DIN generally remains valid for life. What Is a Director Identification Number (DIN)?

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique 8-digit identification number allotted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to individuals intending to become directors of companies in India.

Under Section 153 of the Companies Act, 2013, individuals intending to be appointed as directors must apply for DIN in the prescribed manner.

For example, if you become a director in two different companies, you can use the same DIN for both. You do not need to apply for a separate number every time you join another company.

Why Is DIN Required, and Who Needs It?

DIN is required to identify company directors and maintain accurate records of their appointments, resignations and involvement in different companies.

    It is mainly used for:

    • Director appointments: A valid DIN is generally required before a person can be appointed as a company director.
    • MCA filings: DIN is used in relevant company registration and director-related forms.
    • Identification: It helps identify an individual serving as a director in multiple companies.
    • Accountability: It helps authorities maintain and verify official director information.

Who Is Eligible to Apply for DIN?

Individuals who intend to become directors can apply for DIN, subject to the applicable legal requirements.

    This includes proposed directors of:

Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals may apply for DIN.

However, DIN allotment does not automatically make someone eligible to become a director. The individual must also meet the appointment and disqualification requirements under the Companies Act, 2013.

Employees and shareholders who are not being appointed as directors generally do not require a DIN solely because of those roles.

Designated partners of an LLP are subject to related identification requirements, explained in the DIN versus DPIN section below.

How to Apply for DIN in India?

You can apply for a Director Identification Number online through the MCA portal. There are two principal application routes, depending on whether you are incorporating a new company or joining an existing one.

    1. DIN Registration Through SPICe+ (New Company)

If you are incorporating a new company, DIN can be allotted to eligible proposed first directors through the SPICe+ incorporation process.

    Steps to apply:

    • Visit the official MCA portal.
    • Register or log in to the portal.
    • Start the company incorporation application using SPICe+.
    • Enter the proposed directors' details.
    • Attach the required incorporation and identity documents.
    • Complete the required digital signatures and certifications.
    • Submit the application and pay the applicable incorporation fees.

Once the incorporation application is approved, DINs are allotted to the eligible proposed directors.

Note: SPICe+ generally supports DIN allotment for up to three proposed first directors who do not already possess a DIN. Other prescribed incorporation arrangements may require additional consideration.

    2. DIN Registration Through Form DIR-3 (Existing Company)

If an existing company wants to appoint you as a director and you do not already have a DIN, you can apply through Form DIR-3.

    Steps to apply:

    • Visit the MCA website and log in.
    • Access Form DIR-3 under the relevant MCA services.
    • Enter your personal and identification details.
    • Provide details of the existing company or LLP in which appointment is proposed.
    • Attach the required documents and supporting authorisation.
    • Sign the application using your Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
    • Complete the applicable professional verification and certification.
    • Submit the application and pay the government fee.

After submission, the application is processed under the applicable MCA rules. If no possible duplicate DIN is identified, DIR-3 is processed through the Straight Through Process (STP).

Applications involving a potential duplicate require additional processing.

DIN processing depends on the application route and whether further verification is required.

    • Through SPICe+: DIN is allotted as part of the approved company incorporation process.
    • Through DIR-3: An application without a potential duplicate DIN can be processed electronically through STP. Cases requiring review may take longer.

There is no universal guarantee that a DIN will be allotted within 30–40 minutes or any fixed number of days.

How to Check DIN Status Online?

You can check the status of an allotted Director Identification Number through the MCA portal.

    • Visit www.mca.gov.in.
    • Open the relevant MCA Services section.
    • Find the DIN enquiry or DIN status service.
    • Enter your 8-digit DIN and complete the required verification.
    • Submit the request to view the available DIN details and status.

DIN KYC Rules and Compliance in 2026

From March 31, 2026, DIN holders are generally required to complete periodic KYC once every three years instead of annually.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs introduced this change through the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Amendment Rules, 2025, notified on December 31, 2025.

The new framework simplifies director KYC compliance while requiring directors to update important personal details whenever they change.

For directors who had already completed their KYC under the earlier framework, the MCA clarified that their next KYC filing would be due by June 30, 2028. Other DIN holders should verify their own compliance position and applicable due date.

The revised form can be used for KYC compliance, updating prescribed personal details and reactivating DINs.

What Happens If DIN KYC Is Not Completed?

Failure to complete the applicable KYC requirement may result in DIN deactivation and difficulties with director-related MCA filings.

Under the revised fee rules, late KYC filing or DIN reactivation attracts a government fee of ₹5,000.

DIN holders must also report changes to their personal mobile number, email address or residential address through DIR-3 KYC Web within 30 days of the change.

    DIN Deactivation, Reactivation and Surrender

Although DIN generally remains valid for life, it may become deactivated or be surrendered or cancelled under the prescribed legal circumstances.

    What Is DIN Deactivation?

DIN deactivation means the identification number has been made inactive in MCA records.

This may occur when a DIN holder fails to complete applicable KYC requirements. Other circumstances may lead to cancellation or deactivation under the relevant rules.

    How to Reactivate a DIN?

If your DIN has been deactivated due to non-completion of KYC:

    • Visit the MCA portal and check your DIN status.
    • Identify the reason for deactivation.
    • Complete the pending DIR-3 KYC Web process, where applicable.
    • Pay the prescribed reactivation fee of ₹5,000.
    • Submit the filing and verify the updated DIN status.

The procedure may differ where the DIN has been deactivated or cancelled for another legal reason.

    How to Surrender a DIN?

DIN surrender is different from DIN deactivation.

Form DIR-5 is used for surrender of a DIN in prescribed circumstances, such as duplicate allotment or where the holder was never appointed as a director and the DIN was never used for filing documents, subject to the applicable conditions.

Resigning from a company does not automatically cancel your DIN.

For example, if you were a director of a private limited company and later resigned, your DIN would generally remain allotted to you. You cannot surrender it solely because you no longer hold that position.

What Is the Difference Between DIN, DPIN and DSC?

DIN, DPIN and DSC are often confused, but their purposes are different.

DIN and DPIN have been integrated by the MCA since July 9, 2011. An individual with an allotted DIN can also use that number for designated partner identification under the LLP framework.

A DSC is different because it is an electronic signing credential rather than a director identification number.

    Conclusion

A Director Identification Number (DIN) is an important legal requirement for individuals planning to become company directors in India. Understanding DIN application procedures, documents, fees and the revised 2026 KYC requirements helps avoid unnecessary compliance issues.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, DIN is generally mandatory for individuals being appointed as directors of Indian companies under the Companies Act, 2013.

The government fee for applying through Form DIR-3 is ₹500. Where DIN is allotted through SPICe+ during company incorporation, no separate DIR-3 fee applies. Incorporation and professional charges may be additional.

The processing time depends on the application route and verification requirements. DIR-3 applications without potential duplicate identification can be processed through STP, while applications requiring additional scrutiny may take longer.

No, an individual should hold only one DIN. If multiple DINs have been allotted, the issue must be corrected through the prescribed MCA procedure.

Yes, a foreign national intending to become a director of an Indian company can apply for DIN, subject to applicable document, authentication and appointment requirements.

DIN and DPIN are part of an integrated identification system used for directors and LLP designated partners. A DSC is different because it enables electronic signing of forms and documents.

A DIN may be deactivated for failure to complete the applicable KYC requirement. Under the revised 2026 fee rules, late KYC filing or reactivation attracts a ₹5,000 government fee.

Resignation alone does not make a DIN eligible for surrender. Form DIR-5 can be used only where the prescribed legal conditions for surrender are satisfied.
