Earlier, businesses often had to wait for a GST officer to approve changes to important registration details, such as the legal name, directors or additional business locations.
Now, many of these changes can be processed automatically.
The government introduced the revised GST registration amendment process through Notification No. 05/2026-Central Tax dated 26 October 2026, which substituted Rule 19 of the CGST Rules, 2017.
The revised Rule 19 generally came into effect on 1 November 2026, with a separate commencement date for the Rule 14A principal-place amendment provision.
GSTN also issued an advisory on 1 November 2026 explaining how the updated process works.
The key changes include:
Earlier, several changes classified as core amendments required officer approval. Under the revised rules, many of these amendments can be processed automatically, similar to non-core amendments, after successful online validation.
This means businesses can update several GST registration details without waiting for manual approval.
However, automatic approval does not mean that documents and verification are no longer required. Connect with Startup Movers and our experts will help you to get your GST Registration completed.
GST registration amendment means updating the information that a business provided when it first registered under GST.
For example, a business may need to update its GST registration when:
These changes are generally reported using FORM GST REG-14 on the GST portal.
Under Rule 19, an amendment application is generally required within 15 days from the date the relevant change occurs.
The process is different from applying for a new GST registration. An amendment updates an existing registration, while a fresh registration may be required in situations where the law does not permit the change through an amendment.
For example, if a change in business constitution results in a different PAN, the taxpayer must apply for fresh GST registration.
Under the revised GST amendment process, several changes that previously required officer approval can now be processed automatically after successful online validation. These include:
If a business changes its legal name but continues under the same PAN, it can submit FORM GST REG-14 to update its GST registration.
The system validates the PAN details before processing the change. However, if a change in business constitution results in a different PAN, a fresh GST registration is required.
Businesses can update details of partners, directors, Karta and other specified persons responsible for managing the business.
For example, when a company appoints a new director, it can update the relevant details in its GST registration through the automatic amendment process, subject to successful validation.
If a business opens another warehouse, office or branch within the State or Union Territory covered by its existing GST registration, it can apply to add the new location.
The business must submit the required premises documents. The eligible amendment can then be processed automatically after successful validation.
Other eligible particulars furnished in FORM GST REG-01, apart from the principal place of business, may also be amended through the automatic route, subject to the applicable requirements.

|

Important: Automatic processing takes effect only after the prescribed online validations are completed successfully.
Yes, certain changes apply across all GST registrations held under the same PAN.
Under Rule 19(5), amendments relating to the legal name of a business and specified persons, such as partners, directors, Karta, managing committee members, trustees and chief executive officers, apply to all registrations obtained under the same PAN.
For example: Suppose a company has GST registrations in Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
If the company changes its legal name while retaining the same PAN, the qualifying amendment applies across its GST registrations under that PAN.
However, changes specific to a particular business location, such as adding a new warehouse, must be handled under the relevant State or Union Territory registration.
Generally, yes. The Principal Place of Business (PPoB) is the main business location declared in a GST registration.
If a normal taxpayer registered under Rule 9 changes this location, the amendment continues to require examination by the proper GST officer.
However, there is an exception.
Under Rule 19(3), principal-place amendments for eligible registrations obtained under Rule 14A can be processed automatically after successful online validation, provided the taxpayer has not opted to withdraw from that registration route.
This provision comes into effect on 1 December 2026.
Therefore, businesses should check their registration category before assuming their principal address change qualifies for automatic approval.
For amendments requiring officer examination, Rule 19 provides the following procedure:
|
Stage |
Timeline |
|
Officer approves the application or issues a notice |
Within 15 days of application submission |
|
Taxpayer replies to a notice in FORM GST REG-04 |
Within 7 working days of receiving the notice |
|
Officer takes action after receiving the reply |
Within 7 working days |
|
Officer does not act within the prescribed period |
Deemed amendment may apply under Rule 19 |
If the officer finds the application and documents satisfactory, the amendment is approved through FORM GST REG-15.
If additional information is required, the officer may issue a notice in FORM GST REG-03.
An unsatisfactory response may lead to rejection through FORM GST REG-05. If the taxpayer fails to reply within the prescribed period, the application is deemed rejected, with intimation through FORM GST REG-05A.
One of the most important changes introduced in November 2026 is the GST amendment OTP verification requirement.
Under the revised process, the mobile number and email address must be verified for two persons:
Both must complete the required online verification using the prescribed process.
The GST portal also validates PAN, Director Identification Number (DIN) and Corporate Identification Number (CIN), wherever applicable.
The GSTN advisory provides three days from the date of application submission to complete the prescribed OTP verification.
Taxpayers can access the facility through:
GST Portal → Services → Registration → OTP Verification of GSTIN
They can also visit the GST OTP Verification Portal.
It is advisable to complete the verification on the same day rather than waiting until the deadline.
If the required OTP verification is not completed successfully within three days, the GST portal will not generate an Application Reference Number (ARN).
An ARN is the reference number used to identify and track an application.
Without successful verification and ARN generation, businesses should not assume that the amendment process has been completed.
The GSTN advisory does not prescribe a separate penalty solely for missing this verification deadline.
Businesses can apply for the applicable changes through the GST portal. The following is a practical guide to the GST registration amendment process in 2026.
Step 1: Log In to the GST Portal: Visit www.gst.gov.in and log in using your GST credentials.
Step 2: Select the Amendment Option: Navigate to Services → Registration and select the applicable amendment option.
For eligible changes, the portal provides amendment options for core fields and non-core fields.
Choose the appropriate category based on the information you want to update.
Step 3: Enter the Updated Business Details: Update the relevant information, such as:
Make sure the information matches the business's supporting records.
Step 4: Upload Supporting Documents: Upload the documents required for the particular change.
For example, if you are adding another business location, provide the appropriate proof of the premises.
Step 5: Submit FORM GST REG-14: Review the information carefully before submitting the amendment application using the applicable authentication method.
Step 6: Complete OTP and Identity Verification: Where the revised verification process applies, the Primary Authorised Signatory and one selected specified person must complete the prescribed mobile and email OTP verification.
Complete the verification within three days of application submission.
The portal will also perform the applicable PAN, DIN and CIN validations.
Step 7: Check ARN and Download the Updated Certificate: Once the required validations succeed, the ARN is generated.
For amendments eligible for automatic processing, the amended registration certificate is made available on the common portal, wherever applicable.
For amendments requiring officer examination, monitor the application status and respond to any notice within the prescribed deadline.
Note: Portal screens and exact steps may differ depending on the amendment category. Follow the live GST portal instructions.

The documents required depend on the information you want to change:
|
Amendment Type |
Documents That May Be Required |
|
Change in legal name |
Updated legal-name records and applicable supporting evidence |
|
Addition or removal of director |
Appointment, resignation or other relevant company records |
|
Change in partners |
Updated partnership deed or relevant partner records |
|
Additional place of business |
Applicable premises ownership, rent, lease or consent documents |
|
Principal place of business |
Applicable address proof and premises documents |
The exact documents should be checked against the requirements displayed in FORM GST REG-14 and the relevant document list associated with FORM GST REG-01.
Even when automatic processing is available, businesses must provide accurate information and supporting documents.
Example 1: Adding a New Warehouse
Suppose a Delhi-based company opens another warehouse in Delhi. The company can submit an amendment application to add this warehouse as an additional place of business under its existing GST registration.
After submitting the required documents and completing the prescribed online validation, the eligible amendment can be processed automatically.
Example 2: Appointing a New Director
A private limited company appoints a new director. Earlier, updating director details under GST could require officer approval as a core amendment.
Under the revised rules, the company can update the details through FORM GST REG-14, subject to successful online validation.
If the company holds multiple GST registrations under the same PAN, the qualifying change applies across those registrations.
Example 3: Shifting the Main Office
A company registered under the normal GST registration process moves its principal office to a new address.
Unlike adding another business location, this change generally continues to require officer examination. The business must submit the relevant address documents and follow the prescribed approval process.
Although the new process is simpler, businesses should avoid these common mistakes:
Businesses should also keep their GST records consistent with invoices, returns and other compliance documents.
